Top Finance Scholar Joins the Darla Moore School of Business

December 03, 2009

The Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina is pleased to announce prominent financial economist Jean Helwege as the new J. Henry Fellers Professor of Business Administration. An expert in corporate bonds, IPOs and corporate finance, she will begin teaching in the spring 2010 semester.

“The hiring of Jean Helwege along with Professor Allen Berger last year is a mammoth down payment toward our commitment to world-class finance research,” said Dr. Steven Mann, chair and professor of finance at the Moore School.

Helwege was an economist with the Federal Reserve Board from 1988 to 1994. Prior to that, she served as a senior economist on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Berger, too, was a Federal Reserve economist prior to joining Moore. Both are top researchers in their field.

Helwege most recently served as associate professor of finance at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business. She has published numerous articles in top professional journals and has served as an associate editor of the Journal of Financial Services Research, the Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the Journal of Economics and Business. In addition, she has presented at numerous conferences, including the FDIC Derivatives Conference, the New York Accounting and Finance Forum, the Swiss National Bank/CEPR Exchange Rate Conference, and the annual conferences of the American Finance Association and the American Economics Association.

She holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Los Angeles.
