Introducing Robert Lipe

For Robert Lipe accounting runs in the family as his mother was a career accountant and a registered agent with the IRS. Bob received his BA in accounting from North Carolina State University. As he completed his bachelor’s degree and graduated summa cum laude, he was up to more challenges and decided to enter into a Ph. D program. He applied to several programs including the University of Chicago and University of South Carolina. He was accepted to both programs but chose to attend the University of Chicago. Interestingly enough so many years after this decision, destiny brought him back to the University of South Carolina to join the faculty at the School of Accounting.

Bob earned both his MBA and Ph. D in accounting and economics at the University of Chicago. While working on his degree, Bob met Marlys who was a fellow Ph. D student. The two got married during their Ph.D program years.  After graduating with his Ph.D Bob accepted an assistant professor position with University of Michigan where he specialized in financial accounting classes and taught for over nine year. His career then took him to the University of Colorado- Boulder. While Bob was a faculty member for UC-Boulder, he was also working for the SEC in Washington DC as a faculty fellow.

In 1998, Bob joined the University of Oklahoma where he taught for 15 years where he taught a variety of classes in undergraduate accounting, as well as their MACC and MBA programs. Through the years, Bob has been recognized many times with various teaching awards including UO School of Accounting Outstanding Teaching Award, Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Faculty Member and KPMG Centennial Professor. Bob also spent one year working with FASB in Connecticut as a research fellow where he helped with accounting research papers issues and Financial Statement Presentation Project.

Bob Lipe joined our School of Accounting faculty in the fall 2013 semester. Currently, he is teaching financial and managerial accounting classes in the PMBA program. Bob's primary research interest is in financial reporting policy in the capital market setting. He has written several publications on the subject that were published in Accounting Horizons and Journal of Accounting and Economics.

Since he is originally from North Carolina, Bob is excited to be back to Carolinas where he is closer to his family and friends. Bob and Marlys enjoy going to college sport games so he is looking forward to cheering on the Gamecocks!

In the process of settling in the new area, Bob and Marlys recently purchased a new house. One of Bob’s favorite pastimes is working on home improvement and repair projects so the new home keeps him busy.  An interesting fact about Bob is that his preferred method of transportation is a motorcycle.  So during the winter, don’t be surprised if you see him around the School of Accounting in the full motorcycle suit. Bob started riding motorcycles to work during his year at University of Oklahoma because of convenience and better parking options available for motorcycles. Now, it’s his preferred method of transportation and he barely puts any miles on his truck which he mostly uses when working on home improvement projects.

We would like to welcome Bob Lipe to South Carolina. Bob, we are very happy to have you join us at School of Accounting!
