Introducing Laura Feustel
Laura Feustel, originally from Columbus, Ohio, joined the Ph.D. program in August 2013. Laura holds a BA in Accounting from Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, an MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is a Certified Public Accountant. Prior to entering the Ph.D. program, Laura spent 7 years working in public accounting. She began her public accounting career at Crowe Horwath, LLP in Columbus where she achieved the position of tax manager. Most recently, Laura worked at J.D. Cloud & Co. LLP in Cincinnati as a tax manager.
Even as an undergraduate accounting student, Laura knew she wanted to be an accounting academic. Two primary forces helped her translate that desire into reality. The first was a networking activity hosted by the Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting, during which Laura was able to spend one-on-one time with an accounting academic discussing the academic career path. The second was Laura’s mentor and accounting department chair at Xavier University, Professor Sandy Richtermeyer, who provided guidance and encouragement to Laura as she made the decision to pursue academia.
Although her background is primarily in tax, Laura’s primary research and teaching interests are in auditing. As a tax manager, Laura frequently worked on the audit engagement to assist with the accounting and auditing of income taxes. Based on that experience, her interest was sparked in potentially exploring the relationship between tax professionals and audit professionals in an audit setting.
Laura is joined in Columbia by her husband, Doug, and their 5 year-old Shih Tzu-Bichon mix, Bree. The Feustels are big football fans. While Laura’s primary loyalty will always be to the Ohio State Buckeyes, she is happy to cheer for the South Carolina Gamecocks. In her free time, Laura enjoys spending time with friends and family.
