1. Does each department admit an incoming class every year?
No, the Accounting, Management, Management Science (P/OM) and Marketing departments will be accepting applications during the 2016-17 academic year (to start Fall 2017). The Economics, Finance, and International Business/International Finance departments anticipate admitting students during 2017-18 (to start Fall 2018).
2. What is the application deadline?
To have full consideration for university-wide fellowships, all application materials must be received by December 15; additional applications will be accepted until January 15. Applicants are encouraged to submit their materials prior to the deadline because some departments may start making offers earlier if they see an attractive candidate. Some departments will accept applications after this deadline. Interested individuals should check with the Director of the Doctoral Programs, Scott Ranges (email@example.com) for more details.
3. Is a master's degree required for admission to the Ph.D. program?
No. However, students who have a master's degree are more competitive for admission. To earn a Ph.D., a student must take at least a total of 60 credit hours beyond a bachelor's degree (including 12 hours of dissertation preparation). Some credit from a Master's degree can be transferred toward the doctoral degree, depending on departmental approval.
4. Are foreign national applicants considered for financial aid awards?
Yes, all financial aid awards decisions are made on a merit basis.
5. What is the amount of doctoral assistantship awards?
Our stipends are nationally competitive and vary by academic area. For more information contact the Faculty Coordinator in your area of interest. Stipends are guaranteed for four years as long as a student shows satisfactory academic progress.
6. Is a tuition waiver included with the assistantship?
Yes, with satisfactory academic progress students can expect to receive a 100 percent tuition waiver for five years.
7. Is student insurance covered?
Yes, 100 percent of individual student insurance premiums will be covered for students using university insurance.
8. Can a foreign national student meet all necessary expenses based on the assistantship?
Yes. Students receiving graduate assistantships are issued an I-20 form without any additional financial certification needed.
9. Can the doctoral degree be pursued on a part-time basis?
No. The program is structured to be completed on a full-time basis and typically takes four to five years to complete.
10. What are the admission criteria for the Ph.D. in Business Administration program?
Students are considered for admission based on previous academic performance, GMAT/GRE scores, statement of career objectives, letters of reference, and work experience. The weight given to these individual criteria varies according to the area of concentration (i.e., Accounting, Marketing, Finance, etc.). Average test scores and grade point ratios also vary from year to year, depending on the applicant pool. Please see a profile of our current students. Some departments prefer one test over the other, so you are encouraged to check with the individual departments about their requirements.
11. What is the Educational Testing Service institutional code to use for submission of GMAT/GRE/TOEFL scores?
The GMAT institutional code is JV2-TP-78. The GRE & TOEFL code is 5818. It is not necessary to include a departmental code.
12. Can the TOEFL examination be waived for international applicants?
Any international student who completes a degree from a US school will automatically have the TOEFL requirement waived (no paperwork required). We will consider waiving the TOEFL for international applicants from programs and countries where the medium of instruction is English. An official waiver request must be sent to the Director of Doctoral Programs with justification for the waiver request. If the GMAT/GRE score, or other indicators of English, are sub-standard, we reserve the right to require the TOEFL.
