Page Prize 2012

The Darla Moore School of Business is proud to announce the winners of the 2012 Dr. Alfred N. and Lynn Manos Page Prize for Sustainability Issues in Business Curricula. Now in its sixth year, the competition is designed to encourage and support efforts to introduce or substantially upgrade sustainability courses and/or associated coursework into the curriculum of business schools, both nationally and internationally.

The Moore School’s approach to sustainability fosters understanding of the sustainable enterprise across three dimensions: the natural environment, good governance and ethics and the value exchange between firms and their counterparts in governments and civil society. The school is helping business and government entities face today's sustainability challenges.

This year's call for syllabi/curricula resulted in receipt of numerous outstanding applications covering a wide range of disciplines including accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, international business, management, marketing, operations and supply chain management and organizational behavior. A database of winning curricula/syllabi is available on the Moore School website for use by business faculty around the world.

Grand Prize winners receive $1,000 and a framed print of Aegean Sea #6, an original diptych by Lynn Manos Page, certifying the award. Honorable Mention prizes will also be awarded at levels of $250 each. Each finalist will receive a print of Aegean Sea #6. The submission deadline for the 2013 Page Prize will be in January of 2014.

Concentration:  "Sustainability Inspired Product and Service Design"

This course is a hybrid discussion and application intensive experience, combining an immersion into the topic of sustainability (with an emphasis on reading, discussion & reflection) and a hands-on, new product/service design practicum (with an emphasis on learning-by-doing & reflection). The former is a lot like a seminar class; the latter is more like a studio class.

The course is divided into two interdependent modules. Both address design and sustainability, but the emphasis and approach shifts. The first module is focused on sustainability related issues from a variety of perspectives and shifts towards an exploration of sustainable design frameworks and specific design principles. During the second module, students are simultaneously learning and applying “design thinking” using an integrated sequence of techniques culminating in a final project binder and presentation.

Formally, the primary objectives of the course are as follows: 

  1. Understand the issues and opportunities related to sustainability, especially within the context of new product and service design.
  2. Develop a working knowledge of sustainable product design frameworks and principles.
  3. Develop experience with the mindset and methods of design thinking

Additionally, several skills and insights are promoted throughout the course, including:

  • The ability to integrate discrete knowledge into a more holistic understanding of the interdependency of people, functional disciplines, socio-cultural systems and physical resources
  • Nurturing students’ creative instincts and confidence
  • Gaining comfort with complex, ambiguous problems and the uncertain path towards specific, viable solutions
  • Appreciating the importance of process to guide one’s thinking without constraining it
  • Developing a greater sense of purpose and empowerment; helping students explore their mission and meaning in life

Course: “Social, Environmental and Ethical Responsibility (SEER) Certificate”

    Based on a holistic framework and strategic lens for business leadership that adds a critical fourth focus on product excellence to the traditional tripe bottom line, Pepperdine's certificate in Socially, Environmentally, and Ethically Responsible (SEER) Business Strategy Certificate program developed a natural outgrowth of the school's values-centered focus for future business leaders.  The program is intentionally designed as a certificate and not a standalone concentration to allow students to integrate the principles of sustainability and corporate responsibility into existing concentration tracks.  Having these principles foundationally embedded into strategy will enable Graziadio MBAs to fulfill Graziadio's mission by becoming value-driven leaders imbued with entrepreneurial energy in a global context.

    Course: “Financial Analysis of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Data”

      Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance metrics have traditionally been difficult to obtain in any comprehensive or consistent manner. Over the years, standardized metrics have been developed through the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Several thousand multi-national companies now report on ESG performance using the GRI framework and Bloomberg is now making these metrics available to mainstream investors. In the meantime, the newly formed International Integrated Reporting Committee (IRRC) was established to identify a framework for future reporting requirements that would incorporate financial and non-financial reporting. Several leading publicly traded companies are already experimenting with integrated reporting and several countries are beginning to require some form of integrated reporting. Thus, it is only a matter of time before this becomes a norm or requirement in the U.S. 

      Ultimately, financial analysts will have growing access and training on the use of ESG metrics. Anticipating and being ahead of the curve, this course provides students with background knowledge on ESG metrics and experience applying standard financial models to analyze companies and portfolios. Students combine qualitative and quantitative analysis of ESG metrics to tasks such as: ranking companies, evaluate corporate valuation, and constructing ESG-based portfolios. The course is designed both for finance students who want to be on the leading edge of their field as they pursue jobs in either corporate finance or investment management, as well as Net Impact students who are planning less traditional careers and are looking for additional financial and accounting skills to further build their sustainability skills and knowledge.
